Whitney was supposed to do the vocals on Gypsy Woman but didn't show, so Earl called Eddie Powers who had worked with the band once before and Eddie recorded Gypsy Woman without ever having heard the song.

In April 1964, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was number 3 on the charts and "Gypsy Woman" was number 10. A few weeks later "Gypsy Woman" was number 1.
The song even climbed to number 3 on WABC radio in New York.
